A member of Cardiac Surgery Associates, Dr. Hartmuth Bittner guides the Lafayette, Indiana, practice focused on minimally invasive procedures for cardiothoracic (CT) disease. Treating many high-risk, advanced-stage patients, he performs the replacement and repair of pulmonary and other heart valves, in addition to addressing aortic aneurysms. Experienced in lung and heart transplantation, Hartmuth Bittner, MD, undertakes coronary bypasses that encourage normal arterial flow.
Dr. Bittner earned his doctor of medicine degree at the University of Heidelberg Medical School, magna cum laude. He also lectured on “The Human Nervous System” at his alma mater. During medical school, he tutored students in gross anatomy through Harvard Medical School’s New Pathway Program. He subsequently completed residency and fellowship training at the Duke University Medical Center, focused on general, cardiothoracic, and vascular surgery.
Dr. Bittner spent a decade as professor of cardiovascular surgery with the Heart Center of the University of Leipzig, one of Germany’s most up-to-date and high-volume heart clinics. He was named chair of thoracic transplantation and active with the Eurotransplant International Foundation. He has also earned recognition as being among the American Health Council’s “Best in Medicine” in the category of CT surgery.
